L’Avenir Single Block Chenin Blanc scores 96 at Decanter World Wine Awards

The L’Avenir Single Block Chenin Blanc 2019 was rated as the best Stellenbosch Chenin Blanc at the Decanter World Wine Awards, with a score of 96 points.

Chenin Blanc is the cornerstone – hence the local name Steen – and most planted variety in South Africa, with most of the revered wines coming from Stellenbosch. “To be selected as the top Chenin in Stellenbosch is no small feat and the winemaking team is delighted by this honour,” explains winemaker, Dirk Coetzee.

L’Avenir’s Single Block Chenin Blanc is produced from a vineyard planted in 1973, which is certified as a Heritage Vineyard through South Africa’s Old Vine Project. A collaborative project between the Old Vine Project and Interloire isolated the genetic material of L’Avenir’s Single Block Chenin Blanc in 2020 and will propagated the cuttings for commercial use in 2025.

According to Dirk, the 2019 vintage of the Single Block Chenin Blanc specifically stands out with enchanting floral notes. This vintage was also selected by Higgo Jacobs, certified with the Court of Master Sommeliers, for the Strauss & Co South African Heritage auction. The L’Avenir Single Block Chenin Block 2019 was a barrel selection from the certified heritage vineyard. Only 3 000 individually numbered bottles were produced, which are available on allocation.
